He earned his mathematics diploma from Saadat High School in Bushehr in 1969, then studied at the Tehran Higher School of Insurance — working as an assistant accountant, teaching mathematics at a south-Tehran high school, and later joining Iran Air. He graduated in 1976 and returned to Bushehr when his father fell ill, serving in the provincial Department of Commerce from 1977, rising to deputy director-general, until his retirement in 2003.

In 1976 he studied correct violin technique with Haraj Manukian at the Higher Conservatory of Music. In 1992, Ostad Hossein Alizadeh introduced him to Saeed Farajpouri to refine his kamancheh technique, and he also studied in person with the legendary Ostad Asghar Bahari, drawing deeply on his style and experience.

In 1984 he co-founded the Moftoon Ensemble in Bushehr with Asghar Ghorbani (tar), Esmail Roshanravan (santur), Gholamreza Vazan (vocals), Gholamreza Daman (tombak and santur), Mashallah Haghparast (oud), Abdolaziz Rezazadeh (tar and bass tar) and Alireza Saeednia (tar), first led by Farrokh Yazdanfar. The ensemble took first prize and the gold medal at the Fajr Music Festival in 1988, 1989 and 1996; Honarvar assumed its leadership in 1989. At the 1994 Isfahan festival — where, with the singer absent, he led the group, played kamancheh and sang all at once — they took third place, and second place in Tehran in 1995. In 2001 Moftoon was recognised as the most honoured traditional music ensemble of the Fajr Festival's first twenty years.

Among his proudest memories is Ostad Ali Asghar Bahari's visit to Bushehr and their performance together: the meeting of Honarvar's kamancheh with the master's impassioned, love-filled playing created an atmosphere that remains etched in the memory of all who heard it.

Today he has revived the Moftoon Ensemble with a new blend of veterans and young players, and continues to lead it. Across the decades — before the revolution and after, until the pandemic — he taught violin and kamancheh at the Shahid Ganji Cultural Center, the Bushehr Music Society and the Zaryab Music School. He serves on the Poetry and Music Council of IRIB Bushehr and collaborates on its music productions.

In his youth he was also an athlete: provincial schools champion in 65 kg freestyle wrestling in 1967–68, and for eight years in the 1980s head of the provincial wrestling board.

His son Mohammad-Ali plays several Persian instruments — santur, tombak, setar, bass tar and more — performing and recording alongside his father and with other Iranian ensembles.
